Blueberries for dogs: fresh berries in a bowl as an occasional treat

High in healthful nutrients and blueberries have the most antioxidants of any fruit.

Blueberry

Blueberries for dogs add fiber, vitamins, and plant compounds to a food or treat. They can be one small part of a balanced diet, but they are not a cure for illness.

What blueberries contain

Blueberries have fiber and vitamins C and K. They also contain natural plant compounds, including polyphenols. However, the amount of each nutrient can change with the fruit and how it is processed.

Blueberry powder is made from dried blueberries. So, check the full product label for the ingredients and serving directions. Do not assume that every powder has the same nutrient level.

  • Fiber is part of the whole fruit.
  • Vitamins C and K occur naturally in blueberries.
  • Plant compounds add to the fruit’s nutrient profile.

Offering blueberries as a treat

If you give your dog fresh blueberries, wash them first. Also, start with a small amount and watch for an upset stomach. Since berries are small, they may be a choking risk for dogs that gulp food. For that reason, mash them or choose a safer treat size when needed.

Keep treats in moderation. The American Kennel Club also advises washing berries and checking with your veterinarian if you have questions about feeding them. Read its blueberry feeding tips.

Learn about blueberries for dogs

Blueberries for dogs can be a plain fruit treat. However, every dog has its own needs, so keep new foods small and check with your veterinarian if you have questions. These berries add variety, but they do not replace complete dog food.

If you are comparing fruit ingredients, read our blackberry ingredient guide. Like blueberries, berries are best offered in moderation as treats.

Keep nutrition claims in context

Blueberries can add plant nutrients, but one ingredient does not prevent or treat disease. Instead, focus on a complete and balanced diet that fits your dog’s needs. If your dog has a health issue or a special diet, ask your veterinarian before adding a new food or supplement.

When comparing products, read the label and follow its directions. In addition, ask your veterinarian whether the product fits your dog’s diet and health plan.
